Australia’s legendary captain Ricky Ponting has recently made a sensational statement, in which he called England’s star batsman Joe Root the main candidate to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record in Test cricket.
Ponting believes that Root, if he stays ‘hungry’ and keeps scoring runs for the next four years, can surpass Tendulkar’s record of 15,921 runs.
Recently, Root crossed the 12,000 run mark in the Edgbaston Test against West Indies, becoming only the seventh batsman to do so in the history of Test cricket.
Currently, Root is at the seventh position with 12,027 runs, 32 centuries and 63 half-centuries in 143 Test matches. Now his eyes are on Kumar Sangakkara (12,400 runs) and Alastair Cook (12,472 runs).
Ponting told ICC Review
“He (Root) can potentially do it. He’s 33… more than 3000 runs behind. It depends on how many Test matches he plays, but if he’s playing 10 to 14 Test matches a year and if you’re scoring 800 to 1,000 runs a year, it means he’ll only take three or four years to get there. So he’ll be 37 years old,”
He also praised Root’s form, “Root has overcome his inability to convert half-centuries into big scores. Now when he scores 50, he’s able to score a big century. That’s been a big change for him.”
So, will Root challenge Sachin’s record? Ponting believes that if Root’s hunger remains, this possibility cannot be ruled out.
